On June 20, 2013, Terri and I embarked on our first real trip together, I think ever. We headed to the place of our birth, Evansville, Indiana, for the McConnell family reunion.
Our first stop in the trip was layover in Denver.
The layover in Denver ended up being a very frustrating one. The loaded us onto our plane, got all geared up to take off, then slowed down, turned around, and went back to the terminal. By the time they let us off the plane, you could very much smell the scent of smoke. After we were all back in the terminal, the airline informed us that one of the air-conditioning units on the plane had blown, and they were going to see if they could fix it, since the AC controls the air pressure. They also told us they would know more in an hour and a half.
Terri and I weren't freaking out yet. As long as we got to St. Louis before the rental car place closed at 10 p.m., we would be ok. The only down side was the long it took us to get to St. Louis, the later it would be before we got to Evansville (which is about a 3 hour drive from St. Louis).
As promised, an hour and a half later, they informed us that they were unable to fix the unit, so disconnected it completely. Since the plane still had one operational AC unit, they were going to go ahead and board us, and fly us to St. Louis. We took off without a hitch.
Thirty minutes into the flight, however, the AC switched off and there was no air blowing through the little vents either. Ten minutes later, it was starting to get very hot in the cabin. About 5 minutes after that, the captain's voice came over the intercom, and informed us that the other AC unit had quit, and we were going back to DENVER. We were about half way to St. Louis already!
By the time we landed back in Denver, the cabin of the plane was like a sauna, and because the pilot had to fly low, due to the lack of air pressure in the cabin, a lot of people, including Terri, were feeling kind of green.
We waited another 20 minutes in the terminal before the airline announced that they were loading us on a new plane, immediately. Third times a charm...right?
We finally landed in St. Louis at 9:45 p.m. Terri and I were literally running through the airport to get to the Enterprise shuttle. We made it with one minute to spare.
By the time we got to the rental place, got the car, and got on the road, it was almost 11 p.m.
The car had a Bluetooth system, so Terri set up her phone and asked it to call Keith. In response to this request, the car replied, "Did you say put on teeth?" Guess we got a dumb car.
We were originally suppose to arrive in Evansville at 7 p.m. on the 20th. Instead, we arrived at 2 a.m. on the 21st.
After some much needed sleep, we met Grandpa McConnell, Bonnie, Mom, Aunt Donna, Uncle Marshall, and Aunt Gina at Denny's for breakfast. Grandpa was surprised because he didn't know we were coming.
That night we went to an Otter's baseball game.
They play in the stadium where portions of the movie A League Of Their Own was filmed, and the mascot helpers actual wear the Racine Belle uniforms from the movie.
Eventually during the trip, the whole family met at a park to take pictures.
After the family session, Terri and I had a little more fun of our own.
We also got together with everyone at Grandpa's house. I learned how to play Ladder Ball, and I am actually pretty darn good at it (except for my first throw ever; that went directly toward my Uncle Bubba...Opps!).
We also had some off the hook weather while we were there.
It was really fun seeing everyone. The last time I was in Evansville, Indiana, Terri and I were 15, and our cousins Shane, Brooklyn, and Dade (who we didn't even know existed, but are actually a pretty awesome bunch) weren't even born yet! I was also really great to see our cousin Steven and meet his family. Wish David, Trevor, Quinn, Jessica, P.J., and William would have shown. Oh well.
Before we went back to the airport in St. Louis, Terri and I decided to take a little detour, and stopped at the Gateway Arch. We didn't have time to go up top, but it was still fun just walking around.
